Il y a très, très, très longtemps, une fillette haute comme trois mangues, qui s’appelait Mayiba vivait dans un village avec sa grand-mère. Une terrible canicule s’abattit sur le village et malheureusement la grand-mère de Mayiba tomba gravement malade, une seule chose pouvait la soigner : quelques gouttes, juste quelques gouttes d’eau. Commence alors pour Mayiba une quête initiatique, et équipée d’une grosse louche pour transporter l’eau qu’elle espère trouver, elle part en terre inconnue chercher le Munja grand fleuve qui tel un serpent se déplace dans la savane où vit le Ngila, bête mystérieuse qui fait trembler les Hommes …
